what is a serum and when should you use one

Is there something about your skin that you’d just love to improve on? Maybe it’s preventing and reducing fine lines or brightening dark spots, perhaps it’s calming breakouts or even improving skin texture. Can we even achieve targeted skin results like this?

Especially when the season change, your skin needs may also change because of different environmental factors such as humidity, heat, and even different food you may be consuming.

Thankfully, it can be as simple as switching up one product in your routineyour serum. Sound too good to be true?

what exactly does a serum do that my moiturizer doesn't?

Facial serums are cream, gel, or liquid formulas that house highly concentrated amounts of active ingredients (think vitamin C, retinol, antioxidants). They are expertly designed to deeply penetrate into the skin to trigger change and create results far better than moisturizers or facial oils can on their own.

Think of a serum as the supplements in your daily diet; they boost the benefits of what you’re already consuming and provide targeted care for what you need the most. Serums contain those key active ingredients that support vital skin functions and processes (skin firming, brightening, acne-healing, and skin-rebuilding mechanisms).

At portia-ella, we like to call them "boosters" because this is what serums truly do: They boost the health of your skin!

how to use your serum

Serums are best applied on damp skin because the extra moisture helps skin evenly and deeply absorb the product. No matter what type of serum you’re using, a pea-sized amount is about all you’ll need.

  1. Cleanse the skin
  2. Use toner, mist, or essence
  3. Follow with your serum
  4. Seal in all the goodness with moisturizer, facial oil, and/or sunscreen
  5. Use an eye cream

Caution: Some serums should only be used in the evening. They may not work with makeup on top or contain ingredients that cause photosensitivity. Read the label carefully! Paying attention to these small details can make a world of a difference in the results you’ll experience. If you're unsure about your serum, PM us! We'll help you pick the right serum!
